A circular glass with water inside that most children (and even child at heart) shake and then snow falls down on a scenery or landscape inside the glass. Fragile it may seem but it is typically a child’s toy. But nowadays it is considered as a collector’s item. What am I talking about? What is this rounded globe with water, figure and snow inside? Snow globe is what they call it or sometimes snowdome or waterglobe. The reason for why they have created it is not yet clear but it looks like it is inline in the family of paperweights. Since it is like a dome with a flat bottom, it will be easy to grasp and at the same time it is a decoration given that it has a good panorama in it. Just to give a different look of a paperweight maybe. But at the present time instead of a heavy snowdome they are creating and producing thinner glass and sometimes they change glass into plastics to lighten up the globe. Also having water inside could have different color in time or sometimes could develop moss in it so they change it in to light oil. Water can also be added some substance like glycerin or glycol for antifreeze and it can slow down the drop of the snow. They incorporated music by adding music box under the globe to make it more entertaining. And instead of shaking it every time for you to view the snow falling down, it has now a built in electric motor to let the snow circulate in the globe without shaking it. You will have the great time looking on it and the snow won’t vanish. And also for you to see the landscape inside the globe even it is already dark, you can have a snowglobe with light in it. It has lead that is operated by batteries to add pleasant outlook. The snow that you are seeing are not really snow because it will melt in view of the fact that it will be in water or oil. They are flakes of non-soluble soap or tiny bits or pieces of gold or metallic foil.


A lot of figures and landscape can be seen or were fashioned for snowglobes. If you are going around the world, for sure they have snowglobes in every gift stores and toy stores that has a landmark inside that represent their country or city. Animal figurines are familiar as well. Dolphins, dogs, and birds and any animals you can name can be in it. A historical event can be featured in a dome too.
